The Doctor is the one who fixes people. That’s the name- he MAKES PEOPLE BETTER. In the continuity of the show, the Time War occurred in the no-space between Paul McGann as Eight and Eccleston as Nine. The Time War is what haunts the Doctor- all the lives he took and how lonely he feels. If John Hurt is now going to be the actual Ninth Doctor, the one who broke his promise to fix things, to make people better, then that means we just saw the regeneration of the Doctor that fought on Gallifrey in the Time War.
That’s my theory, at least.
